Tous offrent ainsi une contribution décisive pour accompagner la figure de Merleau-Ponty au-delà de son premier centenaire et cette revue au-delà de ses premiers dix ans.

This is a double anniversary: the centenary of Merleau-Ponty’s birth and the ten year anniversary of the founding of Chiasmi International. We are celebrating both of these with a genuinely special issue. The three editors of Chiasmi have contributed at this issue, as well as several of the most important and prestigious Merleau-Ponty specialists from three generations and from several parts of the world. Certain of these feel that they are called to think Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy today, or to think with Merleau-Ponty today’s philosophy, or yet to think with Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy today. Other of our contributors have extended these investigative lines by following certain of the most remarkable directions of thought, which ramify or even uproot themselves from Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy, or which intersect with Merleau-Ponty’s thought in a significant way. All make a decisive contribution in order to accompany the figure of Merleau-Ponty beyond his first centenary and this journal beyond its first ten years.

Doppio anniversario: il centenario della nascita di Merleau-Ponty e il decennale di quella di Chiasmi international. Lo festeggiamo con un numero davvero speciale, al quale hanno contribuito, insieme con i tre direttori della rivista, molti tra i più importanti e prestigiosi specialisti di tre generazioni e di diverse parti del mondo. Qualcuno si è sentito sollecitato a pensare la filosofia di Merleau-Ponty oggi, oppure a pensare con Merleau-Ponty la filosofia oggi, o ancora a pensare con la filosofia di Merleau-Ponty l’oggi. Altri hanno idealmente prolungato queste linee di ricerca seguendo alcune delle più rilevanti direzioni di pensiero che dalla filosofia di Merleau-Ponty si sono in seguito diramate ovvero staccate, o che con essa si sono significativamente incrociate. Tutti offrono così un decisivo contributo ad accompagnare la figura di Merleau-Ponty oltre i suoi primi cento anni e questa rivista oltre i suoi primi dieci.

D'un côté un texte du célèbre architecte Steven Holl, où il explique la manière dont l'idée merleau-pontienne de chiasme lui a inspiré le design du nouveau musée d'Helsinki, le Kiasma Museum. D'un autre côté, le premier texte posthume du spécialiste américain de Merlau-Ponty, M. C. Dillon. Dans cet article, Dillon essaye d'intégrer une pensée de la mort à une pensée de la vie et livre par conséquent une interprétation de Merleau-Ponty toute personelle, très originale. Ce qui fait l'unité de ces deux textes c'est l'idée d'institution. En effet toutes les structures qui s'inscrivent dans la durée, aussi differentes que la science, l'idéologie, la musique, la littérature, en un mot toutes les structures d'ordre symbolique, sont instituées. En lisant les textes de ce volume, nous prenons une fois encore la mesure de l'inépuisable richesse de la pensée de Merleau-Ponty, à l'origine de réflexions constamment renouvelées.

On the one hand we have a text from the famous architecte Steven Holl, in which he explains how Merleau-Ponty's idea of the chiasm inspired his design for the new museum in Helsinki, the Kiasma Museum. On the other hand, we have the first posthumous text by the American Merleau-Ponty scholar M. C. Dillon. In this text, Dillon attempts to integrate a thought of death into a thought of life and therefore in his own, very original way he challenges Merleau-Ponty. What unites these two texts is the idea of institution. In fact all persisting structures are institued, structures as diverse as science, ideology, music, and literature, in a word, symbols. Across this volume, we see once again that the inexhaustible richness of Merleau-Ponty's thought generates constantly new reflections.

Da una parte, uno scritto del celebre architetto Steven Holl, in cui egli spiega come l'idea merleau-pontiana di chiasma gli abbia offerto ispirazione per il progetto del nuovo museo di Helsinki, il Kiasma Museum. Dall'altra parte, un primo testo postumo dello studioso americano di Merleau-Ponty M. C. Dillon, in cui egli si propone di integrare un pensiero della morte e un pensiero della vita all'interno del suo modo originalissimo di interpretare Merleau-Ponty. Ciò che unisce questi due testi è l'idea di istituzione. In effetti ogni struttura dotata di persistenza è una struttura istituita, e ciò è vero nel caso di strutture tanto diverse tra loro come la scienza, l'ideologia, la musica, la letteratura. In una parola, ciò è vero per tutti i simboli. Attraversando questo volume, facciamo prova ancora una volta dell'inesauribile ricchezza che rinasce dal pensiero di Merleau-Ponty, dando luogo a sempre nuove riflessioni.

De tous les successeurs de Husserl, Merleau-Ponty est certainement celui qui a été le plus soucieux de rester en contact avec les sciences telles qu’elles se font et de ne pas séparer la réflexion philosophique d’une méditation sur leur signification ontologique. Dans ce dialogue, la psychologie joue un rôle privilégié et ce dès La structure du comportement puisque c’est à partir des résultats de la psychologie d’inspiration gestaltiste que Merleau-Ponty réforme l’idée du cogito. En tant qu’elle prend pour objet le sujet même de la réflexion, la psychologie affronte le problème du rapport entre sujet transcendantal et sujet empirique et permet de fonder l’unité de l’âme et du corps exigée par la phénoménologie de la perception. Ce bilan sur Merleau-Ponty et les sciences n’aurait pas été complet sans une confrontation entre la psychologie phénoménologique et l’émergentisme enactif de Francisco Varela.

Of all Husserl’s successors, Merleau-Ponty is certainly the one who was the most concerned about remaining in contact with the sciences as they are practiced and of not separating philosophical reflection from a meditation on their ontological signification. Within this dialogue, psychology plays a privileged role, as in The Structure of Behavior, since it is starting from the results of a Gestalt inspired psychology that Merleau-Ponty reforms the idea of the cogito. As psychology takes the subject of reflection itself as its object, it confronts the problem of the relationship between the transcendental subject and the empirical subject, making it possible to establish the unity of the soul and of the body required by the phenomenology of perception. This settling of accounts between Merleau-Ponty and the sciences would not have been complete without a confrontation between phenomenological psychology and the enactive emergentism of Fracisco Varela.

Di tutti i successori di Husserl, Merleau-Ponty è certo quello che più si è curato di tenere vivo il contatto con le scienze nella loro pratica concreta, e di non separare la riflessione filosofica da una meditazione sul loro significato ontologico. In quel dialogo la psicologia gioca un ruolo privilegiato almeno da La structure du comportement in avanti. È infatti a partire dai risultati della psicologia d’ispirazione gestaltista che Merleau-Ponty propone la sua riforma dell’idea del cogito. Nella misura in cui la psicologia ha per oggetto il soggetto stesso della riflessione, essa affronta il problema del rapporto tra soggetto trascendentale e soggetto empirico, permettendo così di dare fondamento a quell’unità dell’anima e del corpo che è tra i requisiti necessari di ogni fenomenologia della percezione. Completa questo bilancio sui rapporti tra Merleau-Ponty e le scienze un confronto tra la psicologia fenomenologica e l’emergentismo enattivo di Francisco Varela.

La seconda sezione, i cui contributi per lo più provengono dal Merleau-Ponty Circle (University of Western Ontario, 2003), è perfettamente complementare alla prima ed è incentrata sul tema della vita che attraversa le lezioni di Merleau-Ponty sulla natura.

Deux notes de travail inédites de Merleau-Ponty, datées de 1959, qui font référence à Simondon ; le premier chapitre d’un texte inédit que Simondon avait rédigé quelques années auparavant : Chiasmi International publie pour la première fois les témoignages de la réflexion croisée que les deux penseurs étaient en train de mener sur l’un des thèmes les plus décisifs pour la philosophie du XXe siècle : l’individuation. Quelques uns des spécialistes de la question, parmi les plus reconnus, apportent leur contribution au sujet de ces textes, et des rapports entre la pensée de Merleau-Ponty et celle de Simondon. Le thème de la seconde section, à savoir le thème de la vie qui court à travers les leçons de Merleau-Ponty sur la nature, et dont les contributions pour l’essentiel proviennent du Merleau-Ponty Circle (Université de Western Ontario, 2003) se révèle ainsi parfaitement complémentaire au celui de la prémiere.

Chiasmi International publishes for the first time two previously unpublished working notes from Merleau-Ponty that date from 1959 and the first chapter of a previously unpublished text that Simondon had written some years earlier: texts that testify to the intersecting reflections that Merleau-Ponty and Simondon were conducting on one of the most decisive themes for the philosophy of the 20th Century: individuation. Some authors, who are among the best known specialists in the question of individuation, make their contributions bear on the subject matter of these texts, and on the relations between the thought of Merleau-Ponty and that of Simondon. The theme of the second section is the topic of life, which runs across Merleau-Ponty’s lectures on nature, and shows itself to be perfectly complementary of that of the first one. The contributions devoted to the second theme essentially come from the Merleau-Ponty Circle (University of Western Ontario, 2003).

Des dialogues fructueux se nouent à cette occasion : avec Fink, Gurwitsch, Deleuze, Derrida, Marx, Lacan ou encore Mélanie Klein. Couvrant ainsi un large éventail thématique, ce nouveau volume de Chiasmi international témoigne de toute la diversité des recherches en cours sur la pensée de Merleau-Ponty. Par ailleurs ce sixième numéro clôt pour la seconde fois la boucle éditoriale de la direction de la revue, qui fut tour à tour attribuée à Renaud Barbaras, Mauro Carbone et Leonard Lawlor. D’où l’occasion d’un bilan : peut-être pourrait-on dire, sur la foi de ces six premiers numéros, que Merleau-Ponty s’offre aujourd’hui comme un véritable recours, au sens d’un “point de diffraction”, pour la philosophie contemporaine de tradition continentale.

The essays in Between Aesthetics and Psychoanalysis bring to light how Merleau-Ponty’s thought is at once theoretical and practical, aesthetical (in both senses of art and sense-experience) and intellectual. Fruitful comparisons are also made between Merleau-Ponty and other thinkers: Fink, Gurwitsch, Deleuze, Derrida, Marx, Lacan, and Melanie Klein. Being spread over many topics and figures therefore, this volume of Chiasmi International presents the full spectrum of current research concerning the thought of Merleau-Ponty. As well, volume VI of Chiasmi International completes the second full cycle of the rotating editorship among Renaud Barbaras, Mauro Carbone, and Leonard Lawlor. It therefore gives us an occasion to be a bit retrospective. Perhaps, on the basis of these six volumes, it is possible to claim that Merleau-Ponty is the resource, the “point of diffraction,” we might say, for all contemporary philosophy in the Continental tradition.

Questo volume offre un’idea piuttosto precisa della ricchezza delle ricerche attuali sull’opera di Merlau-Ponty. Mostra anzitutto che il concetto di "carne", con cui Merlau-Ponty tenta nei suoi ultimi lavori di caratterizzare il reale stesso, rimane una fonte inesauribile di riflessione. Testimonia, d’altra parte, della straordinaria fecondità della filosofia di Merlau-Ponty in campo estetico, sia nell’ambito della pittura che della letteratura. Più recente è invece la riflessione sul problema dell’immaginario, che sta al cuore della sua ultima filosofia, nella misura in cui essa continua ad essere una fenomenologia della percezione, a nutrirsi della psicoanalisi e ad elaborarsi sul filo di un ininterrotto dialogo con Sartre. Infine, per quanto poco Merlau-Ponty l’abbia esplorata, la questione etica va riscuotendo un crescente interesse tra i ricercatori, a riprova del fatto che nessun pensiero forte dell’intersoggettività può mancare di confrontarsi con essa.

Ce volume donne une idée assez exacte de la richesse des recherches actuelles sur l’oeuvre de Merlau-Ponty. Il montre d’abord que le concept de Chair, par lequel Merlau-Ponty, dans ses derniers travaux, tente de caractériser le Réel lui-méme, demeure une source inépuisable de méditation. Il atteste, d’autre part, de l’incroyable fécondité de la philosophie de Merlau-Ponty pour la pensée esthétique, aussi bien dans le champ de la peinture que dans celui de la littérature. En revanche, plus récente est la réflexion sur le problème de l’imaginaire qui est au coeur de sa dernière philosophie, en tant que celle-ci demeure une phénoménologie de la perception, qu’elle se nourrit de la psychanalyse et qu’elle s’élabore à la faveur d’un débat continué avec Sartre. Enfin, la question éthique nourrit de plus en plus l’interet des chercheurs, s’il est vrai qu’aucune pensée forte de l’intersubjectivité ne peut faire l’impasse sur l’éthique.

This volume present a rather exact idea of the abundance of current investigations into Merlau-Ponty’s work. First it shows that the concept of Flesh, by which Merlau-Ponty in his final works attempts to characterize the Real itself, remains an inexhaustible source of meditation. On the other hand, it attests to the unbelievable richness of Merlau-Ponty’s philosophy for aesthetic thought in the field of painting as well as in the literature. Yet, more recent is the reflection on the problem of the imaginary which is at the heart of Merlau-Ponty’s final philosophy insofar as the latter is still a phenomenology of perception, insofar as it supports itself with psychoanalysis, and insofar as it is devoloped by means of a continuous debate with Sartre. Finally, the ethical question, more and more, supports the interest of those of us working on Merlau-Ponty — if it is true that no strong conception of intersubjectivity can bypass ethics.

The notion of "flesh", such as Merlau-Ponty elaborates it, is beginnig to occupy a central position in international philosophical debates. In recent years, some of the most famous contemporary thinkers have struggled with it. They were brought to the flesh by its intrinsic interest as well as by the contemporary reconception of our experience of the body and its relation to the world. The dense and original articles in which this volume consist attempt to return to the strictly philosophical coherence of the notion, as well to the tightly woven network of references to the flesh within Merlau-Ponty’s thought, where it retains the eminent place that we know it possesses. In addition, with this fourth volume, Chiasmi International expands its field of investigation by devoting a special section to the thought of the great Czech phenomenologist Jan Patocka.

Le titre de ce numèro trois de Chiasmi International envise délibérément celui de l’un des derniers cours de Merleau-Ponty. En outre, deux notes inèdites sur la musique constituient l’ouverture, exceptionelle, de ce volume. De ces deux façons, on entend mettre en évidence l’attention croissante pour la tendance particulère de Merleau-Ponty à chercher dans la non-philosophie les raisions de sa philosophie. The title of the third volume of Chiasmi International deliberately reverses the tutle of one of Merleau-Ponty’s last courses. Moreover, two unpublished notes concerning music make up the unusual opening of this volume. In these two ways, we are intending to emphasize that more than ever we must pay attention to Merleau-Ponty’s particular tendency to seek the reason of (his) philosophy in non-philosophy. This attention is exactly what serves as the guiding thread throughout the ssays collected here, some of which have been solicited from the partecipants of the fourth "International Symposium of Phenomenology" (Perugia, 2000) while others were presented in the third seminar on Merleau-Ponty at the Husserl Archives in Paris (2000-2001).

Questo terzo numero di Chiasmi International ha un titolo che deliberatamente rovescia quello di uno degli ultimi corsi di Merleau-Ponty. Due sue note inedite sulla musica costituiscono inoltre l’eccezionale apertura del volume. Nell’uno e nell’altro modo, esso intende evidenziare come sempre più vada imponendosi l’attenzione per la peculiare tendenza di Merleau-Ponty a cercare nella non filosofia le ragioni della (sua) filosofia. E’ appunto quell’attenzione a fare da filo conduttore ai saggi qui raccolti, alcuni sollecitati ai partecipanti al quarto "Simposio internazionale di Fenomenologia" (Perugia 2000) mentre altri sono stati presentati al terzo seminario su Merleau-Ponty presso gli Archivi Husserl di Parigi (2000-2001).

Sont réunies ici la plupart des interventions au séminaire sur Merleau-Ponty qui s’est tenu aux Archives Husserl de Paris en 1998-1999 et 1999-2000, un certain nombre de conférences en anglais issues du 22ème Colloque International Annuel du Merleau-Ponty Circle qui s’est tenu à l’université de Seattle du 18 au 20 septembre 1997 et, enfin, un certain nombre de contributions italiennes significatives, dont l’"Introduction" que Enzo Paci — l’une des grandes figures de la phénoménologie italienne — écrivit en 1958 pour la traduction de l’Eloge de la philosophie. Cet ensemble permet de mieux comprendre la genèse de l’ontologie de Merleau-Ponty et, en particulier, l’importance de sa réflexion sur la Nature.

Brought together here are most of the presentations made at the Merleau-Ponty seminars which were held at the Husserl Archives, Paris, in 1998-99 and 1999-2000. Some of the essays in English come from the Twenty-second Annual International Meeting of the Merleau-Ponty Circle which was held at Seattle University from the 18th to the 20th of September, 1997. And finally, there are a certain number of important Italian contributions, among which is the "Introduction" that Enzo Paci — one of the great figures in Italian phenomenology — wrote in 1958 for the translation of In Praise of Philosophy. This collection allows us to understand better the genesis of Merleau-Ponty’s ontology and, in particular, the importance of his reflections on Nature.

Si raccolgono qui la maggior parte degli interventi al seminario su Merleau-Ponty tenutosi presso gli Archives Husserl di Parigi nel 1998-1999 e nel 1999-2000, una scelta rilevante di testi in inglese presentati al XXII Convegno internazionale annuale del Merleau-Ponty Circle, svoltosi presso la Seattle University dal 18 al 20 settembre 1997, nonché un certo numero di significativi contributi italiani, fra cui l’"Introduzione" che Enzo Paci — una dei maestri della fenomenologia italiana — scrisse nel 1958 per la traduzione dell’Elogio della filosofia. Un insieme straordinario per comprendere la genesi dell’ontologia di Merleau-Ponty e, in particolare, l’importanza della sua riflessione sulla Natura.

En mars 1998 a été organisé per l’Université de Milan un colloque sur "L’heritage de la philosphie de merleau-Ponty dans la pensée contemporaine", rèunissant les spécialistes du monde entier. La féconde confrontation scientifique à la quelle il a donné lieu est recueillie dans le présent volume, qui réunit en édition trilingue (français, anglais et italien) lea actes du colloque et d’autres contributions portant sur le même thème.
Ce volume inaugure l’èdition internationale de la revue Chiasmi, devenue Chiasmi International, pubiée en co-èdition par l’Associazione culturale Mimesis di Milano, la Librairie philosophique J. Vrin de Paris et par l’University of memphis. Elle s’intéresse non seulement è l’oeuvre de Merleau-Ponty mais, plus généralement, au champ de pensée qui est né et se dévelope autour de cetet philosophie.

In March 1998 the University of Milano organised anh hosted a conference on "The Heritage of Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s Philosophy in Contemporary Thought" that assembled specialists from the whole world. The fruitful anr rigorous confronattion that ensued in summarised in this volume, which collects the conference proceeding and other contributions on the same theme in a trilingual edition (French, English and Italian).

With this volume therefore we inaugurate the international version of the journal Chiasmi, now named Chiasmi International, co-published by the Associazione culturale Mimesis (Milan), by the Librairie philosophique J. Vrin (Paris), and by the University of memphis. It concerns not only Merleau-Ponty’s works, but also the thinking that stars with and develops around Merleau-Ponty.

Nel marzo del 1998 l’Università degli Studi di Milano ha promosso un convegno su "L’eredità della filosofia di Merleau-Ponty nel pensiero contemporaneo" che ha riunito specialisti da tutto il mondo. Il proficuo confronto scientifico che ne è derivato si condensa nel presente volume, che raccoglie in edizione trilingue (francese, inglese e italiano) gli atti del convegno e altri contributi dedicati al medesimo tema.
Si inaugura così il corso internazionale della rivista Chiasmi, divenuta appunto Chiasmi International, pubblicata in co-edizione dall?Associazione culturale Mimesis di Milano, dalla la Librairie philosophique J. Vrin di Parigi e dalal University of Memphis, e rivolta non solo all’opera di Merleau-Ponty ma, più in generale, all’area di pensiero che intorno a quelal filosofia nasce e si sviluppa.
